鬼は外、福は内
Hello everyone! Today, I'd like to introduce you to one of Japan's unique festivals called Setsubun. It's celebrated on February 3rd or 4th and marks the beginning of spring according to the old Japanese calendar.
What is Setsubun?
Setsubun is a traditional Japanese event where people throw roasted soybeans to drive out evil spirits and welcome good fortune. The name "Setsubun" literally means "seasonal division," signifying the transition from winter to spring.
Throwing Beans - A Fun Tradition
On Setsubun, people gather at temples and homes to participate in the bean-throwing ceremony. While throwing beans, they shout "Evils out, Fortune in!" This lively event is especially enjoyed by children.
Ehomaki - A Special Sushi Roll
Another tradition on Setsubun is eating Ehomaki, a special sushi roll. It's eaten while facing the lucky direction of the year, and there are rules to follow: you must eat it whole without cutting it and remain silent while eating.
